Many of us at Columbia benefit from the work done by illegal immigrants in a way similar to the way Spaniards used the labor of the 'Indios'. How does the arguments in these texts help you evaluate a policy towards them?
de las Casas attempts to appeal to Spain in humanizing the indios because of their apparent inteligence that merits them their own humanity. In a similar fashion, the United States has granted undocumented people liberty to staying and living in the United States under DACA. This legislation is especially useful for undocumented college students because it provides them with the opportunity of staying. and finishing their degrees before being able to apply for citizenship. This type of policy reminds me of how de las Casas attempts to humanize the indigenous much like the American government tries to prove that immigrants are worth living here. There is a tactic to prove immigrant workers' worth to the United States as well as a justification to opposing political sides. There is no doubt that the United States profits off of illegal immigrants so it is equally as justified in extending citizenship in people who already participate and are hard working.
