Paul says that ‘sin dwells
in me’. Jesus says that bad thoughts are as bad as bad actions. What does that
mean for the understanding of what a person must do to become a good person?
This goes along with the
notion of ‘circumcision of the heart’ which helps us understand the requirements
for belief in God and following his laws. This makes belief in God more accessible
to outsiders who may be dissuaded by punishment for failure—there’s value in
pursuing Christian ideals even without completely attaining them. The flipside
of this is that it requires that you be good both in action and in spirit. If
it’s the thought that counts when you do bad, then the though also counts when
you’re (ostensibly) doing good.
