The hypothetico-deductive model refers to scientific theory that concerns results obtained through observation or experiment which then must be verified by empirical evidence. The results may predict further effects of the theory through inferences, but rely on empirical evidence to verify or disprove the inferred theories. Essentially, general principles explain empirical phenomena through theory as the deductive system.
Huygens’ model begins with the verifiability of “fixed and incontestable Principles” in Geometry, which resemble the “clear and evident” ideas of Descartes’ view. Geometry models a study wherein Propositions derive from fixed Principles which “are verified by the conclusions to be drawn from them.” That is, Geometers can be considered truthful because their propositions build on absolute, fixed principles which can then be verified through empirical evidence in nature. He argues that the hypothetico-deductive model applies for “things which have been demonstrated by the Principles that have been assumed correspond perfectly to the phenomena which experiment has brought under observation.” In other words, one would approach complete proof of a theory if its general Principles correspond perfectly with the observed phenomena. One can then infer that the same Principles may explain new phenomena: “one can imagine and foresee new phenomena which ought to follow from the hypotheses which one employs, and when one finds that therein the fact corresponds to our prevision.” The important elements of the model are therefore fixed and clear principles to derive theory from, verifiability through empirical evidence (as opposed to the truths being self-evident), and the ability to infer and further predict new phenomena.
As history has progressed, there has been an evident, exponential increase in the focus of empirical over theoretical studies. al-Ghazali discussed this when analyzing beliefs, leading to influencers like Descartes and Huygen.
ReplyDeleteIn Huygen's preface, he expresses a hope for the continuation of the discovery of empirical truth following his "Hypothetico-Deductive Model". As Nikhil clearly simplifies, this reasoning model relies on inference and transverse properties based on physical proof. Ironically, Huygen suggests an advancement of his own findings through this model when he states, "I hope also that there will be some who by following these beginnings will penetrate much further into this question than I have been able to do..." Although the "things...that have been assumed correspond perfectly" are vague and subjective, it is possible that Huygen's very own model can perfect itself.
