Economic Inequality Tentative Response

Locke believes all men are entitled to life and property. Social inequality is thus fought for since taking it away could be seen as taking away life from others. The name of liberty encompasses most of what Locke speaks of. A great deviation on this topic is the right to your own life. The religious strains in his argument prevent man the “liberty” of man of harming himself. Locke has a more optimistic of man than Hobbes. Locke believes man is inherently charitable from biblical teachings so the state is unnecessary of providing any basic economic safety net. Giving back is to God not to the state. Locke would likely see taxes aimed at promoting economic fairness as an injury on behalf of the haves. Since Locke spoke out in favor of biblical slavery in the Hebrew Bible he would likely not see a problem with working under people for little pay. Locke would likely also speak out in favor of public goods for necessities with the belief that they belong to God. People own what they work but “work” can be argued.
